Harry Bosch's TV Return Officially Makes A Ballard Problem Worse
ScreenRant
Harry Bosch is returning to television in the upcoming prequel series, Bosch: Start of Watch, which could further push Ballard into irrelevancy. The police procedural series, Bosch, about the titular detective played by Titus Welliver, is getting another addition to its surprisingly expansive universe, which already includes Bosch: Legacy and Ballard.
Bosch and Bosch: Legacy are beloved series that operate more like one show, following Bosch before and after his time with the LAPD. It's Ballard where things really spin off, focusing on Detective Renée Ballard (Maggie Q). Ballard's a good show, but it's a bit removed from the main series. With the new series, that feeling will only be accentuated.
MGM+'s New Bosch Show Won't Star Titus Welliver
MGM+ has announced that Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch will be back in a new sequel series titled Bosch: Start of Watch. As the title suggests, Start of Watch will depict the beginning of Bosch's career in the LAPD, showing how he became the gruff, sarcastic, and exceptionally talented detective we all know.
Bosch is based on the novels by Michael Connelly, but Bosch: Start of Watch is an original story, though Connelly will be involved as an executive producer (via Deadline). With this original story comes a younger version of Harry Bosch, one who won't be portrayed by Titus Welliver.
Ballard Is Great, But Harry Bosch Is The Heart Of The Franchise
Ballard is the third show in the Bosch universe, and after debuting in July 2025, the series was renewed for a second season. It's a strong series, boosted by Maggie Q's exciting performance, but it suffers from the same issue that afflicts most spin-offs of popular shows: it's always compared against the original.
Ballard is a little like Bosch without Bosch, and while it was great when there was no Bosch or Bosch: Legacy, now that Harry's back, Ballard is going to have some trouble creating space for itself in this TV universe. Hopefully, Amazon Prime will give both series attent
