Extra points: Brennan Marion hiring a familiar story for CU Buffs football
Boulder Daily Camera
Daily Camera sports writer Pat Rooney takes a look at three topics surrounding CU Buffs athletics as football looks to 2026 and the men's basketball team tries to shake off a rivalry loss at Colorado State.
Colorado hired a mid-major head coach to lead the offense, one who brings a high-tempo, run-based attack and vertical passing game to Boulder.
"The offense is going at warp speed and that means a lot of points and a lot of yards," raved one analyst at FoxSports.com.
"They'll be able to get players and play in a wide-open passing attack. They'll be explosive, athletic and attacking," an opposing coach said to ESPN.
The addition of former Sacramento State head coach Brennan Marion has been roundly applauded by Buff Nation. However, the above comments were made regarding the hiring of Sean Lewis as the offensive coordinator ahead of Deion Sanders' first season as Colorado's head coach in 2023.
Like Marion, Lewis resigned from a head coach job to join Coach Prime's staff in Boulder. Also like Marion, Lewis was considered an inventive, up-and-coming coach who would attract athletic recruits thanks to a combination of youthful charisma and dynamic play-calling. Lewis didn't last a full season as CU's play-caller.
That's not to say Marion has no chance of succeeding where Lewis failed. Maybe Marion and his "Go-Go" offense is the glove that finally fits in Sanders' program in its life after Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders. However, one thing that has become abundantly clear at CU in three seasons under coach Sanders is that the ability to work closely alongside the Hall of Famer has much less to do with any coordinator's technical or schematic acumen as it does meshing with Sanders' unique personality.
Marion will be CU's third full-time offensive coordinator in four seasons under Sanders. In Sanders' six seasons as a college head coach, he has changed play-callers in the middle of the season four times. Those aren't quirks, or even trends. Those are established
