Call for Christmas cards to brighten the holidays for Kamloops attack victim - Lake Country Calendar

Store bought, homemade, musical, colourful, sweet or funny, Kamloops mom Sue Simpson is calling for Christmas cards again to brighten the season for her adult son Jessie.

Jessie was attacked in 2016 with a baseball bat and left in a coma. Nearly a year after the attack, Jessie woke up and has since defied the odds in his recovery.

Simpson said, however, the past year has been a challenging one and she doesn't know how many more holiday seasons they have left together.

"I don't think it's half the year, but almost," Simpson said about the amount of time Jessie has spent in hospital in 2025, including a stay in intensive care on life support. "I did a bit of end of life care with the doctors just to be prepared."

Despite the challenges, Simpson said Jessie remains positive and has been telling doctors he's going to keep fighting. "He's proved us wrong before."

The annual call for Christmas cards began as a way for Simpson and her son to have something to do together over the holidays. The pair has received thousands of cards over the years.

"He loves it when I bring the cards. He wants to know everyone's birthday and he wants to know who sent him the card. He's so engaged in reading them every year."
