Assam Congress seek CBI probe into alleged financial irregularities at Tezpur University

Guwahati: Assam Opposition leader Debabrata Saikia, along with MLAs Nurul Huda and Sibamoni Bora, has written to the CBI Anti-Corruption Branch seeking an independent probe into alleged financial and administrative irregularities at Tezpur University.
The leaders said students, teachers, and staff repeatedly raised complaints over the years.
They cited RTI responses and submissions highlighting procurement lapses, tender manipulation, fund misuse, irregular appointments, and delayed retirement dues
The letter mentioned an RTI reply stating key documents related to the Vice-Chancellor's appointment were "not available."
It cited the Ministry of Education's December 6, 2025 assurance that Prof Shambhu Nath Singh would step down and a formal probe would begin.
The leaders flagged tender manipulation, ?11.48 lakh diesel purchases without contracts, and scrap disposal work awarded improperly.
They questioned ?4.5 crore UGC grant book and e-resource purchases, citing limited vendors and use of questionable certificates
High-value purchases, including a ?7 crore tender and a Semiconductor Parameter Analyzer, raised concerns over restrictive specifications favouring certain vendors.
The High Mast Flag Pole project, inaugurated three days after bid opening with missing documents, was also cited.
HEFA projects faced scrutiny over a ?14 crore furniture purchase favouring a brand, overpriced water coolers, and ?153.71 crore in construction works
The leaders highlighted missing completion certificates and withheld inspection reports.
MacBooks worth ?83 lakh for the Centre for Endangered Languages were procured despite existing systems. An audit reportedly found overnight purchases using questionable certificates and unclear installation records, raising fears of misuse.
Other allegations included IRG fund misuse, irregular hiring, questionable extensions, high-paying contractual posts, and poor hostel conditions.
