AD100 2026: The best of restoration

Project in focus: The Balasaheb Thackeray Rashtriya Smarak in Mumbai. It has an entrance beneath a tree canopy, following which one walks through a tropical garden, a sunken courtyard and onward to a bungalow that retains its heritage façade. Here a grand staircase leads into subterranean natural-light-filled exhibition galleries in concrete and granite. The memorial is a statement in sustainability and reimagined tradition.

Collaborations in the past year: With lighting designers Lucent Worldwide for the illumination of historic buildings in Srinagar and Bombay High Court.

Upcoming projects: The restoration of Chennai's Victoria Public Hall; urban conservation of vernacular heritage at Vadnagar, which includes restoring nearly 200 privately owned houses; restoring Mughal-era pavilions at Shalimar Bagh in Kashmir; designing an eco-conscious home in Mussoorie; a museum project in Baroda Museum and Art Gallery building; retail interiors for flagship Good Earth stores in Dubai, Mumbai, Gurugram.

Project in focus: A garden cottage in Goa. Along the grasslands by a river, the cottage is an annexe to an existing home, and sits within its extraordinary context of garden, river and forested surroundings. Location, landscape and architecture merge in seamless choreography, with the cottage set by a pool, in the midst of a garden, with remarkable views pouring into the built spaces. A balance of vernacular craft, contemporary precision and local building techniques of wattle-and-daub walling system with a breathable mud lime plaster ensure the structure is rooted in its environment.

Collaborations in the past year: With MLIME and many unsung craftsmen.

Upcoming projects: An agro-tourism project in Belur, Karnataka, and a wellness retreat in the Himalayas in Uttarakhand.
